Expressing Location
Locative Adverbs
Hungarian makes the distinction between where you are, where you are going and where you are coming from. We will be using these to help explain the locative cases.

Note: hová is the alternative form of hova.

The Locative Cases
There are nine cases that denote location relative to nouns, they are similar to the postpositions discussed in Section 3.
These cases can be into three groups which are each applied to how the noun is interpreted.
- Hollow box
- Surface
- Solid
A noun can be interpreted in more than one way depending on the context.
Hollow box

Physically speaking, structures, rooms and vehicles are the go-to hollow box nouns, abstractly, it’s a bit harder.

- Bemegyek a könyvtárba. - (I’m going into the library.)
- Sétálok a kertbe. - (I walk into the garden.)
- A pingvin a sivatagban áll. - (The penguin stands in the desert.)
- Úszom a vízben. - (I’m swimming in the water.)
- Integet egy buszból. - (She waves out of a bus.)
- Kisétál abból az étteremből. - (He’s walking out of that restaurant.)
Other uses
- Fából készült. - (It’s made out of wood.)
- Kifogytunk. Miből? Almákból. - (We ran out. Out of what? Out of apples.).
- Igazából. - (Truly)
- A való életben. - (In real life.)
- Békében élünk. - (We live in peace.)

Surface

Naturally, surfaces get these endings and for abstract things, they can be used similarly to for, or about.

- Állok a hídon. - (I’m standing on the bridge.)
- Leesett a lóról. - (He/she fell off the horse.)
- A zöld béka ül az egykerekűn. - (The green frog sits on the unicycle)
- Indulok a repülőtérről. - (I’m leaving from the airport.)
Other uses
- Mire gondolsz? - (What are you thinking about?)
- Min gondolkozod? - (What are you pondering about?)
- Fogalmam sincs amiről beszélnek. - (I’ve no idea what they are talking about.)
- Napról napra. - (From day to day.)
- Időről időre. - (From time to time.)
- Fotót készítettem egy madárról - (I took a photo of a bird.)

-ra/-re can be used as for, and -ról,-ről can be used as about.
- Ezt mindig mondom anyámnak, de soha nem hallgat rám! (I always say this to mother, but she never listens to me!)
- Számíthatsz rám! (You can count on me!)
- Nem rajtam múlik - (It’s not up to me.)
- De miért mindenki rajtunk nevet? - (But why is everyone laughing at us?)
- Róluk még nem írtak könyvet. - (No book was written about them yet.)
- Nem tud róla. - (He/she doesn’t know about it.)

For the most part, these suffixes can be used as a general to & from (Allative,ablative) and for comparatives (adessive). Comparisons will be covered in the next section.

- Szöveget írtunk a zenéhez. - (We wrote lyrics to the music.)
- Sok sikert a tanuláshoz! - (Good luck with your learning!)
- A terem zenétől volt hangos. - (The hall was loud from music.)
- De félek a sötétségtől! - (But I’m scared of the dark!)
- Ragad a keze az almától. - (His/her hand was sticky from the apple.)
- Attól függ. - (It depends. lit. It hangs from that.)
- Ennél a résznél mindig sírok, pedig már millószor láttam. - (I always cry at this part, even though I’ve seen it a million times already!)

As a final note: keep your eye out for phrases that naturally take a locative case as its argument. For examples:
- Elegem van belőle. - (I’ve had enough of it (lit. from it).)
- Ebben nem vagyok túl biztos. - (I’m not too sure about (lit. in) this.)
- Ez mennyibe kerül? - (How much does this cost?)
